Itinerary
Oak of Guernica
This ancient oak, once used for public oaths taken beneath its branches, is the symbol of Basque freedom. Still preserved, it stands as a living monument to resilience, reminding travellers how deeply identity remains tied in the Basque tradition.
Aseembly House
Once the seat of local self-government, the Assembly House preserves the political heart of Guernica, where centuries of debates and oaths helped shape Basque identity! Its ceremonial hall offers a rare glimpse into a living tradition of autonomy.
Peace Square
Located on the site scarred by the 1937 bombing, this square is a quiet space where memorials and greenery soften the memory of destruction. Visitors come to this place, deliberately shaped for reconciliation, to reflect about the meaning of peace.
Pintxos
Pintxo bars serve small bites packed with local flavours —fresh seafood, seasonal vegetables and cheeses paired with txakoli wine! Hopping from bar to bar turns Guernica into a tasting route where every stop reveals a different side of Basque cuisine!
The Peace Museum
This museum tells the story of the bombing through objects, testimonies and photographs that give human scale to the tragedy. Rather than dwelling on horror, it invites visitors to think about peace as a choice and responsibility in the present.
Old Town
The old quarter is a network of cobble-stone streets lined with traditional houses, family-run shops and bakeries filled with local produce. Wandering here reveals everyday Basque life. Feel its energy, rhythm, language... and also the scent of fresh bread!
Saint Mary Church
This Gothic church has watched over Guernica for more than five centuries, its stone walls marked by history but still filled with clear light from the stained-glass windows. It remains a quiet refuge where architecture, faith and time meet without spectacle.
Ceramic Mural
On an outdoor wall in the town centre, a large ceramic mural recreates Picasso’s famous painting in earthy tiles, returning the artwork to the place that inspired it. Seen up close, the texture gives new weight to the figures and makes history feel tangible!
Local Cuisine
Guernica’s traditional dishes draw on the land and the sea: roasted peppers, beans from nearby farms, and tender beef grilled over open flame! Paired with regional wine, the food speaks plainly—no luxury, just honest flavours rooted in the countryside.
